DICKENS, Charles : Our Mutual Friend

(EARLY, Jubal A.). DICKENS, Charles. Our Mutual Friend. Orig. gilt- stamped pictorial cloth. London: Chapman and Hall, [n.d.]. Small 4to. Later edition, stated as "Household edition," on the cover. The copy of Jubal A. Early (1816-1894) with his signature on the front pastedown, reading "J.A. Early, Lynchburg, Virginia." Early lived and practiced law in Lynchburg in the decades following the Civil War. Jubal A. Early was a native of Franklin County, Virginia, and a West Point graduate of 1837. He fought in the second Seminole War and the Mexican War, but spent most of the antebellum years practicing law in Rocky Mount, Va. As a member of the state convention of 1861, he opposed secession, but joined the Confederate Army as soon as his state voted to leave the Union. His first service in the war was as colonel of the 24th Virginia infantry, which he led at First Manassas. After the battle, he was made a brigadier general, to rank from July 21, 1861. He fought with the Army of Northern Virginia until the spring of 1864 and attained the rank of lieutenant general on May 31 of that year. During this period, Early participated in all of the major engagements of the A.N.V., and particularly distinguished himself at Salem Church and at Gettysburg. Before Cold Harbor, he relieved Ewell as commander of the 2nd (Jackson's old) corps. In June 1864, Lee sent him to the Valley where he operated an independent command until the end of the war. In July, he came very close to capturing Washington, but was forced to retreat when Grant reinforced the capitol in the nick of time. Later that same month, Early sent a detachment of his cavalry to burn Chambersburg, Pa. To put a halt to Early's raids, Sheridan was sent to the Valley with a large force to destroy the 2nd Corps once and for all. After losses at Winchester, Fisher's Hill, and Cedar Creek, Early's command was devastated. His operations were brought to an effective halt and Lee was forced to order the 2nd Corps to return to Northern Virginia. Early remained in the Valley, however, and continued to fight with a small force which endured until March, 1865, when it was finally destroyed at Waynesboro. Southerners, who expected Early to repeat Jackson's earlier triumphs in the Valley, called for his dismissal. Lee reluctantly bowed to popular pressure and removed Early from command. However, Early refuse

Dickens, Charles : OUR MUTUAL FRIEND

Chapman & Hall, London; (May 1864-November 1865)

Octavo. In the original monthly parts; 20 parts in 19 illustrated by Marcus Stone. Original blue-green printed wrappers. In part 10 of the advertiser, Hatton & Cleaver states, "In a few copies seen, p. 13 was misprinted "31." The present copy has this misprint. The front wrap of part I is the first issue. Part 14 is lacking the rare ad, "The Economic Life Assurance Society" which would follow the plates, and part 8 lacks the slip to follow Advertiser. All other ads are present. Part 14 is the first issue of the text, with "pricipal" on p. 115, line 38. Front wrap of part 1 is rather soiled and edge-worn. Small loss to the fore-corners of front wrap; part 4 has small loss to lower fore-corner of front wrap. Most wrappers have small loss at spine ends, more on parts 2 and 3. Older spine repair on part 7 and 19/20. Part 19/20 has small repair to upper fore-corner of rear wrap. Some parts are edge-worn. Subscriber's name on margin of front wrap of part 16. All wrappers are correct, except part 7 has the rear wrap from another part. Plates of parts 3 and 13 have faint damp-stain. All other plates are clean and bright. Housed in an older red quarter leather slipcase, with chemise. Altogether, a very good set, lacking just 2 of the ads called for by Hatton and Cleaver. Hatton and Cleaver, pp. 345-370.
