"All the Year Round" was a British weekly literary magazine founded, owned and edited by Charles Dickens and, after the author's death in June, 1870, by his son Charles Dickens (Jr.). It continued publishing until 1895. Many famous novels were serialized in its pages, including Dicken's "A Tale of Two Cities" and "Great Expectations", and "The Woman in White" and "The Moonstone" by Wilkie Collins. Our offering contains the complete first two volumes in the "New Series" and is the last full volume edited by Dickens. The first issue bound into our volume contains an announcement by Dickens to the public: "To The Public / A very unjustifiable paragraph has appeared in some newspapers, to the effect that I have relinquished the Editorship of this Publication. It is not only unjustifiable because it is wholly untrue, but because it must be either wilfully or negligently untrue, if any respect be due to the explicit terms of my repeatedly-published announcement of the present New Series under my own hand. Charles Dickens". Scattered throughout are seven stories by Dickens, under the heading "New Uncommercial Samples". They are amongst the last published writings of the great author, and are not referenced in Eckel (but see James Cook, "Bibliography of the Writings of Charles Dickens", pp. 57). The binding of our copy is rubbed at the extremities and across the spine. The first fifteen pages have a scorch mark to the upper right margin but generally the contents are otherwise unmarked and very clean. Overall, the volume is in good, to good plus, condition., Nicely bound in contemporary 3/4 leather over "pebbled" cloth, Royal 8vo, Pagination: Volume I, pp. iv, 620; volume II, pp. iv, 620; with a separate Table of Contents for each volume.
