Macdonald (1852-1915) was a British soldier and diplomat who is best-known for his service in China and Japan. The letters contained in this book were written by Marguerite de Valois (1553-1615; also known as Margot), a French princess of the Valois Dynasty who later became Queen of Navarre and Queen of France.
