Original brown cloth binding with a gilt illustration on the front cover. The illustration shows Lady Justice on the left and Lady Liberty on the right with ships and a train in the background; an eagle is in the center with a banner that says, "Excelsior." Front and back covers have lightly impressed decorative borders. Gilt lettering and an illustration of a deer head on the spine. 9 3/4" x 11 3/4." This book is divided into two sections. The first section is titled "Introduction" and is about the history of New York. It is 188 pages and has two black and white diagrams of the Croton Aqueduct. "Mammalia" constitutes the rest of the book and is 146 pages with thirty-three black and white plates. Pages are complete. All plates are present and fully intact. Binding is tight. Pages and covers are clean overall. Some pages are beginning to brown. Light foxing on some pages. Front cover is sun faded along the edge. Corners are worn, and the head and tail of spine are chipped. Front cover has a few small stains and dampstaining in the lower-left corner that extends for about the first half of the book; however, the dampstaining is faint and barely affects the text on the pages and the two plates of the Croton Aqueduct. Most of the section about "Mammalia" has no dampstaining including its accompanying plates. A Very Good copy. This book is Part I in a series of six volumes total by the same author. The remaining volumes are Part II: Birds, Part III: Reptiles and Amphibia, Part IV: Fishes, Part V: Mollusca, and Part VI: Crustacea. The first half of this volume is about New York's history and covers various topics such as the state's government, institutions, notable figures. The remaining half about New York "Mammalia" includes an index with English and Latin names and a description of each mammal and scientific illustrations showing the different animals and their anatomy such as skeletal structure.. Book. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: Hardcover
