An illustration from the Voyage of Sebald de Weert, 1598, which included a traverse of the Straits of Magellan. Waiting four months for unfavourable winds to subside the crew studied the Patagonian natives, and here show their methods of crossing rivers. They also reported meeting a hostile race of giants; other expeditions also mention them, although none later that 1764.
