Uncommon, the poems in this collection are taken from the famous book "Hesperides" and "Noble Numbers". Charles Robinson(1870-1937),born in Camden Town, son of wood engraver and magazine illustrator Thomas Robinson, and brother of W.Heath Robinson and T.Heath Robinson.Apprenticed to the lithographers, Waterlow and Son.Inadequate funds prevented him from studying at the Royal Academy Schools, where he obtained a place, but he was able to attend evening classes at the West London Art School and at Heatherley's School of Art.From 1892,he worked as a freelance illustrator, based on his father's studio in the Strand. He joined the very talented group of young artists then working for John Lane at The Bodley Head, and his b/w illustrated edition of R.L. Stevenson's 'A Child's Garden of Verses' (1895) had an immediate success: he subsequently illustrated well over 100 books mostly for children. He was basically a self-trained illustrator, and his work has freedom and originality linked with a real feeling for book design that makes it outstanding. His b/w illustration reflects the influence of Beardsley and Walter Crane, and his watercolour illustrations have delicacy and sensitivity, greatly helped by the introduction of the four colour process early in the century as the alternative to lithography.By incorporating lettering into the page design, and in his planning of the book as a whole,he developed the Arts and Crafts tradition of the book as a work of art.
