Signature on light pink card by Shelby Moore Cullom. Card adhered to beige paper with a Royal Irish Linen, Marcus Ward & Co. watermark. No date, circa 1877-1883. Card measures 4 1/8" x 3 1/8"; paper measures 7 3/4" x 10 1/2." Card reads: "S. M. Cullom, Governor of Illinois." Card, paper, and signature are all very clean and undamaged. Shelby Moore Cullom (1829-1914) was the seventeenth Governor of Illinois, a U.S. Representative, and a U.S. Senator. In 1856, Cullom was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives as a Whig. After the disintegration of the Whig Party, Cullom identified with the Republican and American parties. From 1865-1871, he was took part in the 39th-41st U.S. Congresses. Cullom returned to the Illinous House in 1873-1874 where he served again as Speaker and became the governor of Illinois from 1877-1883. He was also a U.S. Senator from 1883-1913 and oversaw the passage of the Interstate Commerce Act of 1887.. Manuscript. Book Condition: Collectible-Fine.
