Benezit describes how, after arriving from Europe and serving in the American army in the late 1830s, Krieghoff appears in Toronto in 1846, and in 1847 he took part in an exhibition in Montreal, moving to Quebec City to live in 1853. This is where, says Benezit, Krieghoff came into his own and he produced the highest amount of his works. In 1854 he spent some time in Germany and England to have his paintings engraved and lithographed. The majority of his works depict Natives while halting to camp, so to capture both the activities of his subjects, and the environment that surrounds them. (Benezit VI:316)
