The House of Commons, London, 1834

#453. Very good indeed in the original cloth spined drab thin card wrappers, extremities worn and frayed and hinges splitting. A UNIQUE AND IMPORTANT COPY, being the personal copy of Consul Wm. Mark of Malaga, with numerous extensive marginal notes throughout in his hand, and 83 pages of manuscript transcripts in his hand of correspondence omitted from the report. IN 1831, when the people of Spain were oppressed by a cruel and tyrannical government, many of those who were endeavouring to free their country from its yoke found refuge in Gibraltar. Here their leader, General Torrijos, formed a friendship with Robert Boyd, of Londonderry, then in the East India Company's service, who threw in his lot wholeheartedly with the patriots. By treachery, Torrijos, Boyd, and 46 others fell into the hands of the Spanish authorities, and were executed at Malaga on 11th December, 1831. Boyd was a cousin of John Sterling, and the events leading up to his death are described at some length by Thomas carlyle in his Life of John Sterling Chapter 13.
