COOLIDGE, Susan : THE NEW YEAR'S BARGAIN

COOLIDGE, Susan (pseudonym of Sarah Chauncey Woolsey). THE NEW YEAR'S BARGAIN. With Illustrations by Addie Ledyard. Boston: Roberts Brothers, (1871). First edition of the author's first book. Wood-engraved illustrations. 12mo. 8,[2],[5]-231 pp., preceded by a leaf of publisher's advertising for the 1871-72 holiday season. Publisher's blue cloth binding, gilt-stamped title and printed black decoration on upper board and spine, brown glazed endpapers. Text leaves are lightly toned along perimeters, else clean and crisp. Cloth binding shows light superficial rubbing resulting in some loss of color along joints and at heel, crown, and tips of fore-corners. Nevertheless, it is a very good copy of the uncommon first-edition of this title from the author who went on to write the popular series What Katy Did. In this story two children, Max and Thekla, receive a gift and a story from each month of the year. (Doyle, Who's Who of Children's Lit., p. 58)., Very Good
