Signed by the author in black ink in the upper-right corner of the front cover: "Compliments of Frank C. Clarke." Pages and covers are very clean and intact overall. Dampstain in the lower-left corner of the front cover and lower-right corner of the back cover measuring about 1 1/2" x 1 3/4." The dampstaining barely affects the interior pages as an almost imperceptible stain and does not affect text. "Reprinted from The Condor, Vol. XV, pp. 214-226, November, 1913." The Condor is a peer-reviewed quarterly scientific journal and an official publication of the American Ornithological Society. It was founded in 1899 and is still published today. This report contains the initial findings from a preliminary study on why numerous ducks were sick or dying in the southern San Joaquin Valley. The ducks were found in or near brackish water and "[t]hus, the examinations made and the experiments carried on tended to prove that the cause of the trouble lay in the lake water, either as a mineral or as an organic constituent.".
