inscrptn,absence of publisher's price so NO clip to dw/dj - these generally believed to be an export edn,distributed before the UK trade issue.Bright,crisp,clean,glossy,wrap-around,colour scenic landscape dw/dj (reproducing a view of the artist's home, Penkerrig,by the late 18thC Radnorshire painter Thomas Jones) with black-outlined, capitalised white and yellow lettering - title+author respectively - to front panel,black-outlined, capitalised lettered author+title to spine/ backstrip; with negligible shelf-wear,bumping, creasing to edges and corners.Miniscule bumping with reciprocal creasing to head of spine/ backstrip,an approx. vertical 2" closed tear at top edge of front panel of dw/dh in the vicinity of the gutter's fold/crease but strengthened internally on reverse of dw/dj - no other nicks, tears or splits present.Some inevitable but minimal,superficial scoring/indents to either panel but without penetration to boards beneath. It concerns eighty years in the lives of Benjamin and Lewis,identical twins from the Welsh border country,who remain for that entire period either within or near an isolated farm on which they live and subsequently work.Apart from a brief period in the Army,from which Benjamin is dishonourably discharged,they avoid the draft for the First World War,they never marry,and after the death of their parents, they sleep in the parents' bed for over forty years.
A traditional rural drama: a hot-headed father who mistreats his educated wife and disrupts her attempts at schooling the twins,rural family feuds involving violence,a suicide,army brutality,the demise of a noble family due to corruption.
