Signature on beige card by Mary Hartwell Catherwood in black ink. No date, circa 1877-1890s. 3 3/4" x 2 1/4." Card reads: "Sincerely your friend, "Mary Hartwell Catherwood." On the back, "Mrs. James Steele Catherwood" is printed in original black ink. Card and signature are very clean and intact. Mary Hartwell Catherwood (1847-1902) was an author from the Midwest who was known for her popular romance novels, short stories, and poetry. Her pen names included Mary Hartwell and Lewtrah. Her novels were often set in the Midwest, and she was praised for the historical accuracy of her stories. Catherwood also wrote for Lippincott's Magazine, Harper's Magazine, and the Atlantic Monthly.
