CAMPBELL, Ethel : The Life of Sam Campbell, Told in Verse and Lettered By His Daughter

Privately Published "For My Father's Friends", 1944

A very good copy indeed in the original oatmeal cloth, light stain centre spine. An autograph note by the author on the title page states "This book was never published E.C.". A superb INSCRIBED PRESENTATION copy to Alice Cox (1897 - 1979), noted pioneer of psychiatry in South Africa. The inscription spreads over two pages, and is in the form of a 66 line poem in the author's typical calligraphic hand, written from the Observation Ward at the Johannesburg General Hospital, and dated 4/8/47. The poem deals largely with an incident involving Australian troops in transit in a vessel "Seang Choon", and the conflict with the Durban Base Commander in respect of allowing it to enter the port to be cleaned and disinfected.
