BUXTON, Thomas Fowell >(Edited By Charles BUXTON) ) (WITH Important Letter to Francis CUNNINGHAM) : Memoirs of Sir Thomas Fowell Buxton, Baronet, With Selections from His Correspondence

John Murray, London, 1848

Very good indeed in contemporary fullchocolate brown morocco gilt, head spine and hinges rubbed, all edges gilt. AN IMPORTANT FAMILY PRESENTATION copy, inscribed on 1/2 title: "Eight of the grandchildren of Thomas Fowell Buxton to their dear aunt Rechenda Louisa on her wedding day April 18 1848 Upton. Thomas Fowell Samuel Gurney, Edward North, Henry Edmund, Charles Louis, Rachel Louisa, Francis William, Elizabeth Ellen". TIPPED IN is an important A.L.S. to Francis Cunningham, dated Ocober 8, 1820. The letter is 4 full pages 4to, with some cross writing on the rear leaf. In it Buxton discussed prison matters, including Cunningham's intention to translate Buxton's work on Prisons. Buxton suggests to Cunningham that he substitutes his Swiss prison experiences for Buxton's examples of bad English prisons. Buxton also refers to Priscilla's state of health and other matters. Francis Cunningham was a leading light in the prison reform movement, with close associations with Elizabeth Fry and her circle. With the armorial bookplate of Henry Ford Barclay, who marries a descendat of the Buxton family.
