2 vols. The excessively rare first issue, without Burton's name on the spine. An ex-library copy, newly professionally and sympathetically recased and refurbished in the original chocolate brown cloth, with the following faults: VOL.I: Rectangular library stamp blindtamped on each board. 3 line withdrawn library rubber stamp on title page. ink library number verso title. VOL.II: the upper 85% of the original spine has been replaced by a matching strip of original period brown cloth, now printed with the relevant lettering in gilt to match the original of the first volume. There is a similar withdrawn stamp on the title page. The frontispiece map is torn along one of the upper folds: this has in the past been left protruding from the book resulting in those exposed margins (a few mm.) becoming acid browned and very sl. chipped. Apart from these flaws there are no other faults, and the text in both volumes is remarkably clean and tight, and virtually unread. Images are available.
