Printed by the Argus Printing and Publishing Co. 4to; cloth-backed pictorial papered boards; pp. (vi) + 46 (printed rectos). Edges a little worn; small scuff to upper board, with bottom fore-corner a bit bumped; minor foxing to endpapers. Very good. (SABIB I, p. 242; Hosken, p. 22) "D.C. Boonzaier is probably South Africa's most famous cartoonist/caricaturist and one whose satire was most influential on the political scene during the first quarter of [the 20th] century." - M. & E. "As a cartoonist Boonzaier's fame is founded on his My Caricatures and Rand Faces and on the political cartoons he did for Die Burger." - DSAB I, p. 95. Although Boonzaier was not happy in Johannesburg, his sojourn there resulted in important friendships in the art world, and the production of this remarkable work, in which the influence of Japanese art is very evident in the minimalism of the cartoons. Among the prominent Transvaal personalities who do not escape the satirist's attention are Generals Smuts and Botha, Judge-President J. de Villiers, Anton van Wouw, Sir David Graaff, C. F. Stallard, Harry Solomon, and F. H. P. Creswell. H. J. Hofmeyr is not spared, but rather sportingly provides a preface: "A fleeting glance at my effigy on page 14 of this volume will gain me the sincere sympathy of those who have not taken to heart the wise man's advice never to read a preface." Very good in the original 1/4 beige cloth, spine darkened and worn, boards lightlt marked, worn at extremities, front hinge cracking but intact else a clean tight example of this uncommon title. Obscurely inscribed "With compliments of the Season from Adam Lindsay Stewart (in advance) 1932. See Page 20".
