An important and welcome addition to the Enid Blyton adventure story canon for all Blyton fiction collectors/officianados. Harry Rountree (1878-1950) Born Auckland, New Zealand, son of a banker.Worked as a lithographer in a commercial studio. Attracted by British illustration,he moved to London in 1910,where his work was noticed by S. H. Hamer, the editor of Little Folks (a British periodical). Working for books as well as magazines,he became known for his drawings of animals, which he drew with a keen eye for humorous detail. His distinctive style has a faintly fin-de-siecle flavour, with densely worked areas of deep shadow contrasting with 'bleached out' areas of light, creating an insistent surface pattern. He was a member of the London Sketch Club, and a friend of Harold Earnshaw, with whom he played golf. [Earnshaw studied art in London and also was a member of the Sketch Club and the Chelsea Arts Club.He lost his arm in WW1, but taught himself to draw left-handed.His work appeared regularly in children's annuals and anthologies, where his drawings and colour plates can be seen to echo the work of John Hassall in their humour and bold conception. He married Mabel Lucie Attwell**,and is thought to have been responsible for some of the more naturalistic parts of her drawings, such as the animals.Died as a result of his war injuries,in 1937.] Harry Rountree seemed to have outlived his popularity as an illustrator - one of his last commissions was Winifred Humphries' 'Wog and Wig.'(1947) - dying in relative poverty at St. Ives,Cornwall, where he is commemorated by a plaque on the harbour jetty.
