UK,slim12mo HB minus dw/dj,1st edn.[True UK first edn with the 'THIS BOOK IS PRODUCED IN COMPLETE CONFORMITY WITH THE AUTHORIZED ECONOMY STANDARDS' advice/ notification,and stated 'First published in 1945' to verso of title page.Uncommon example in a book of its age and given the period of production,i.e. 1942-1947 - with wartime paper-rationing,and the poor quality of paper generally used and survival rates of air-raids on domestic and commercial properties i.e publishers+ printers.Any dw/dj would have been of substandard quality and fragility and be prone to subsequent disintegration and usually discarded,or be reverse printed - possibly coming from an entirely different book/title.] VG.A neat,ink handwritten familial gift presentation inscrptn and date (Xmas 1945) and further,an owner's (recipient's) inscrptn: name+address to ffe.Slightly grubbed, publisher's original,beige cloth bds with stamped purple ink author's facsimile signature to lower,right-hand corner of upper bd similar lettering to a slightly darkened spine/backstrip; with negligible shelf- wear and minimal bumping to edges and corners - small nicks and fraying at front bd's bottom of spine's gutter's edge and some slight fraying to front,top corner's fore-edge for approx 2".'Ghosting' shadow at both head+foot of spine of residual removed( ?) sellotape.Fairly clean,plain white eps inscrptns excepted,without foxing/spotting or any off-set foxing shadows.An aged,yellowed sellotape repair to hinge of frntis and title page opposite and a similar repair to pp158/9.Top+fore- edges very lightly aged but bright and clean without foxing; contents bright, tight,clean - text body clean,no dog- ear reading creases to any pages' corners, appears unread - apart from my own collation.UK,slim 12mo HB minus dw/dj,1st edn,7-159pp [paginated] includes 21 chapters,b/w line illus by Elisabeth Wall throughout the text and the book,plus [unpaginated] half-title page,colour frntis and title page.A very uncommon title in the author's oeuvre.
A highly collected and prolific children's book author/illustrator,and an unusual item/ephemera in Blyton's bold style and will be an important and welcome addition to the canon.Wartime issues/ editions are notoriously and particularly scarce and as such,are highly sought after.
