Eileen is most remembered for her collaboration with Enid Blyton,notably for the 'Famous Five' series (1942-1963) - though she also published her own children's books in the 1940s,and then working mainly on her wildlife illustrations from the 1950s onwards,based on the wildlife in her garden. Enid Blyton's books have sold over 500 million copies and have been translated into other languages more often than any other children's author.She wrote over 600 books and hundreds of short stories, including favourites such as 'The Famous Five','The Secret Seven','The Magic Faraway Tree','Malory Towers' and 'Noddy'. Born in London in 1897,Enid lived much of her life in Buckinghamshire and adored dogs,gardening and the countryside.She died in 1968 but remains one of the world's best-loved storytellers. [Originally and first published September,1942.This edn,7th imp April,1950.] VG/VG-.Owner's handwritten child-like hand,red ink name+address to front pastedown,partially obscured by dw/dj's inner flap and a further black ink printed name-stamp to top,right-hand corner of front free endpaper (ffe).Matt,colour pictorial artwork by Eileen Soper,illustrated front panel of dw/dj with red+ white lettering; black and fairly bright,unfaded red letters to a white spine/backstrip which has pairs of parallel black lines above and below author's name at head of same,followed by the title in the middle and also above and below publisher's name at foot of same - no price-clip to dw/dj (6s).To front panel of dw/dj,a small abrasion/gouge with loss,to that panel's fore-edge.Dw/dj has been internally strengthened with contemporary(?) adhesive brown paper to both inner flaps and the spine/backstrip too,in an attempt to rectify concomitant small splits, small tears and tiny chips with miniscule loss.
