Basler (1906-1989) was an American historian. He is perhaps best-known for editing the collected works of Abraham Lincoln. He also taught at the Alabama Teachers College in Florence, Alabama. In this article, Basler makes the case for Abraham Lincoln being a literary artist and worthy of scholarly study in this capacity. Basler discusses some of Lincoln's speeches and writings and analyzes their literary artistry. He examines Lincoln's word choice, cadence, and overall effect among other literary attributes as well as the content and context of Lincoln's speeches. Basler places Lincoln alongside John Milton, Bret Harte, William Shakespeare, and other noted writers.
