Hugh Thomson was born in Ireland in 1860 and moved to London in 1883. He was a widely published line artist and book illustrator, working in the golden age of late Victorian/Edwardian gift book illustration, and decorated some of the most popular works of English literature from authors such as William Shakespeare, Jane Austen, W.M.Thackeray, George Eliot, Oliver Goldsmith, J.M.Barrie, Nathaniel Hawthorne and Elizabeth Gaskell He died in 1920.
