First Edition (first printing) of this collection of eighteen supernatural tales, of which 6,000 copies were printed. Crown 8vo. 298pp + xiv publisher's catalogue at the rear. Red cloth lettered in gold at the spine and upper board and with a small gilt-stamped illustration. With a colour frontispiece plate by N.C.Wyeth, loose but just holding, and one further unaccredited monochrome plate. Cloth at the backstrip lightly faded, and just a little rubbed and frayed at the head and base. Some browning to the endpapers and spotting to the preliminary and concluding leaves.
