Most of the pages are clean and intact. Back pages numbered 147-196 have are browned with slight chipping on edges. Walter Allen (1911-1995) was an English literary critic and novelist and was part of the Birmingham Group of authors. Although the Birmingham Group was characterized as proletarian in the 1930s, the Birmingham authors were known for their social mobility. Allen's The Urgent West is a critique of the "American dream" as he relates the American novel to American history. In the first half of the book, Allen discusses material success and individualism throughout United States history, two characteristics often associated with the U.S. In the latter half of The Urgent West, Allen examines American literature and talks about notable authors' (such as Mark Twain, F.
