Original billhead printed and handwritten in black ink on light beige paper. Small black-and-white illustration printed at top. Datelined May 22, 1897 in Sacramento, California. A stamp shows this bill was paid June 15, 1897. 8 1/2" x 5 1/2." Billhead is very clean and intact except for slight age toning, two vertical fold lines, two small indentations slightly affecting text and illustration, two tiny chips not affecting text, and two small closed tears measuring about 1/2" each (neither affecting text). A Very Good copy. An original billhead from the Adams-Booth Company to J. A. Kasrburg [?]. Kasrburg purchased two line items, "Sugar" ($16.78) and "Salt" ($3.56) for a $20.34 subtotal ("27.84" is written at the bottom which may or may not be the grand total). The printed header reads, "Adams-Booth Co., Importers & Wholesale Grocers, 1009 to 1019 Front St." The Adams-Booth Company was a wholesale grocery business that was an iteration of Booth & Company. Newton Booth (1825-1892), an American entrepreneur and politician, figures prominently in the history of Booth & Company. Online information varies, but Booth & Company is generally referenced as being founded in 1850 or 1851 with Booth as the founder (or a co-founder) of the company. Booth is also notable for his political career. He served as a California State Senator from 1862-1863, the 11th Governor of California from 1871-1875, and a United States Senator from 1875-1881. Beginning in 1865, Booth & Company was located at 1015-1017 Front Street in Sacramento. 1015-1017 Front Street constituted the northern portion of a building commonly referred to as the "Booth Building" which doubled as Booth's residence from 1866-1892.
