A frontispiece and one other copperplate, both engraved by Tanner, of apparatus. Pp. xxiv, [25]-236. 12mo., contemporary paper boards with a paper spine, and a paper spine label. Ex library, but with minimal markings: a perforated stamp to the title leaf and the first leaf of text and a couple of ink stamps in margins. The binding shows general wear all over, with the lower board foxed. The boards are firmly attached despite superficial cracks along joints. Text is nicely printed and clean for the most part, with foxing to endpapers and fly leaves. Accum (1769-1838), a German-born and educated chemist, emigrated to London in 1793 to serve an apprenticeship and to continue his scientific studies, where he stayed and worked for most of his professional career. Although he never made any significant contributions to pure chemistry, his contributions to technical and industrial chemistry were important: he did much to promote the introduction of gas lighting, and to alert the public to the dangers of food adulteration and the dubious methods and fraudulent claims of some merchants. Like Humphry Davy and other contemporaries, Accum became a popular lecturer and author of books to accompany his courses in practical chemistry, pharmacy, and mineralogy, such as this PRACTICAL ESSAY ON THE ANALYSIS OF MINERALS.
