The occasion was the trip to London for Queen Elibath II's Coronation. Malan was the first Apartheid period Prime Minister of South Africa, retiring from this position in 1954. Nicolaas Christiaan Havenga (1882-1957) was a South African politician who served as Finance Minister in the governments of J. B. M. Hertzog and Daniel François Malan. Following the Prime Minister's retirement in 1954 Malan indicated that Havenga was his preferred choice of successor.
