This beautifully engraved sea chart was issued undoubtedly to accompany the first main edition of Bellin's 'Hydrographie Francoise'. Bellin is most noted for his excellent contribution to marine cartography. This example focuses on the Gold Coast of Africa and extends southwards to take in the Island of St. Thomas on the equator. This early chart by Nicolas Bellin details the Gold Coast of Africa. Bellin (1703-72) was Hydrographer in the French Dépôt de la Marine. With access to the latest navigational reports, he produced a great many maps and charts of excellent quality. This particular one appeared in the "Hydrographie Francoise". With engraved title page by Pierre-Philippe Choffard dated 1758 & 13 maps by Bellin. 8 of these are folding, two in early colour, there are also 9 engraved vignettes in the text, 8 of which are views, pp. xii, 171. With original silk tie. A few leaves a little browned, one or two foxmarks, map of Barbados with rustmarks.
A rare work describing the British colonies in the Antilles with engraved title and 13 maps by Jacques Nicolas Bellin. It includes historic and geographical accounts of Jamaica, Antigua, Barbuda, St. Christopher (St. Kitts) and Nevis, Monserrat, Barbados, Anguilla, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda and the Lucayes or Bahamas. Eight of maps are folding, of note are those of the Virgin Islands, the Bahamas and Bermuda. There are also 9 engraved vignettes in the text, 8 of which are views. Royal Library stamp to title, Ireland inserted, one or two fox marks, otherwise in good condition.
Jacques Bellin was Hydrographer in the French Dépôt de la Marine. With access to the latest navigational reports, he produced a great many maps and charts of excellent quality. This uncommon atlas of the British Isles was issued at the outbreak of the Seven Years War between Britain and France. Apart from the fine maps the book contains numerous detailed plans of harbours and some excellent detailed engravings of towns.
