Henry St. John Bolingbroke was born in Battersea. In 1712 he went to Paris to make the final arrangements for peace and took charge of the peace negotiations resulting in the treaty of Utrecht being signed in 1713. In 1735 he moved to France and continued to live there until 1742. During this time, he wrote his Letters on the Study of History in which he violently attacked the Christian religion.
