VIOLET HUNT : The Last Ditch. A novel

Stanley Paul & Co., London, 1918

First Edition (first printing). 8vo. viii, 309pp + [iii] publisher's advertisements. Brown cloth lettered in black at the spine and with a black-stamped border to the upper board. Cloth lightly marked and soiled, with a little dust soiling to the top edge and some bruising to the backstrip ends. Free endpapers lightly toned and with a little light spotting to half a dozen preliminary and concluding leaves. The text block appears to be made up from two different types of paperstock, with one type (totalling just eighteen adjacent leaves) now really quite tanned, but the remainder really very crisp and bright. Former owner details inked to the front pastedown and subsequently struck-through. An almost very good copy. No dust wrapper. An uncommon Great War novel - and one of the earliest to be penned by a woman. Isobel Violet Hunt (1862-1942) was a literary hostess and author of (mostly) feminist novels. She founded the Women Writers' Suffrage League and participated in the founding of International PEN. She was also the lover of Ford Madox Ford who lived with her for eight years at her South Lodge home in Kensington and subsequently fictionalised her as both 'Florence Dowell' in 'The Good Soldier' and 'Sylvia Tietjens' in the 'Parade's End' sequence.. Book. Book Condition: Good. Binding: Hardcover. Jacket: No Jacket
