-cornered,publisher's original,full brown buckram with a triple-line tooled edged border - black ink border edge within the two gilt borders,an impressed/tooled gilt design with those borders,gilt lettering and gilt portrait silhouette to front board,spine/backstrip with gilt and black ink line printed compartments and gilt title-ing within them,rear board plain and undecorated,a brown+white striped headband and immaculate plain blue-green eps.The binding design is based on that of an early 16thC manuscript in the British Library.Top edge coloured green,fore-edges bright and clean.UK,8vo HB+slipcase,7- 158pp [paginated] includes translation with an introduction by George Bull,text followed by 31 leaves,each bearing a lithographic photographic plate on the recto,with descriptive letter press on the facing verso.Plus [unpaginated] 2pp blanks,half-title with b/w photographic plate illustrated frntis to it's reverse, title page,contents list/table,and acknowledgements to reverse of last photographic plate.A small accidental diagonal corner crease on bottom corner of text of Plate 31.The genuine plates reproduce the paintings,sculpture and architectural designs by Michelangelo.The text is extracted from George Bull's 1965 Penguin translation of parts of Vasari's
'Vite de piu eccelenti pittori,scultori
ed archtetti',which was first published in 1550; however,the Penguin edition had been expurgated,and Bull was able to restore the text for The Folio Society edition.[A three-volume selection from Bull's revised edition of 1987 was published in a uniform style in 1993.] Printed and bound by W & J Mackay & Co Ltd.,Chatham.Set in Bembo 13 point leaded 1 point.Illustrations lithographed by Westerham Press Ltd., Westerham.
