"A large map of Africa with a Latin description across the top border and a French title within the cartouche in the lower left corner. This cartouche is colourful, with a nude woman sitting on a rectangle of masonry situated in a rural scene with foliage and trees in the background, with elephants at the back around the trees. In the foreground is a partial view of an elephant and, adjacent to the masonry on the right, a lion looking to its right towards a coiled snake appearing to be moving towards it.
There appears to be a compromise in the mapping of the Nile basin, showing the river rising from Lake Tzana, in an area marked Demba, though the Ptolemaic lakes Zaire and Zaflan are retained, unconnected to the Nile. The map shows the Cape settlements in the south and the Portuguese ones on the lower eastern coastline and mainland. The centre of the map is blank with a Latin legend stating: 'I would rather show this part of Africa as unknown and uninhabited than rely on my imagination.'
The map is most decorative, illustrating Pierre van der Aa's predilection for embellishment. Although the map first appeared in 1713, it was reissued in 'Galerie Agreable du Monde,' an atlas of sixty-six volumes published in 1729." (Norwich 70)
