"A versatile man, Van Zyl was a fine rugby, cricket, and tennis player in his youth, and later became chairman of the Hamiltons Rugby Club and was also a founder member of the Milnerton Turf Club. He was in addition greatly interested in dogs and the breeding of them, as well as in growing roses. For many years he was chairman of the Western Province Agricultural Society and also served on the committee of the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens." - DSAB IV, p. 720-1.
