"At the time of my intensive study, my sanctuary at Ngong covered an area of some forty-odd acres and I had the free run of adjoining land to the south, in all about ninety acres. . . . This compact area . . . provided suitable nesting environment for a diversity of birds: swamp-loving species, those of veldt and pasture, birds of woodland and forest, those of scrub and bush, and finally those of reedbeds and open water. No shooting ever took place. The 'vermin' and predators were unmolested, for I wished to obtain some insight into Nature's ways of keeping a balance. Leopards, serval cats, genets and mongooses, bushbuck, reedbuck, red and gray duikers, and pigmy antelopes, came and went as they pleased.
