VAN KEULEN, Johannes : Pas-caert Vande Zee-custen van Engeland van Orfordness tot aen Flamborger Hoost ..

510 x 580 mm., attractive wash colour, thick paper example although backed at a later date, very large margins some some light wear to very edge, otherwise in good condition.

This superb sea chart of the east coast of England from Aldeburgh in Suffolk to Flamborough Head in Yorkshire was first published in the magnificent ‘Lichtende Zee-Fakkel’ in around 1688. Unlike many charts this includes inland detail such as the towns of Lincoln, Ely and Norwich amongst others. The firm of Van Keulen was founded around 1680 with the publication of the 'Zee Atlas'. The multi volume 'Zee Fakkel' followed soon after. This is an example of the second state with the addition of ‘Sunke I' in the mouth of the Humber amongst other updates and a change of pagination to '22' lower right. This second state first appears according to Koeman from 1706 which is corroborated by the extra large margins which accompany these early eighteenth century editions. With an attractive title cartouche. Koeman (1967-70) IV no. 46 st. 2 Keu 38A.
