Robert van Gulik (1910-1967) was a Dutch author, Orientalist, and diplomat. Van Gulik specialized in the study of Chinese history and culture. Notably, Van Gulik translated the eighteenth-century Chinese literary work, Di Gong An ("Cases of Judge Dee"), a collection of Judge Dee stories. Judge Dee (or, Judge Di) was inspired by the historical figure, Di Renjie (c. 630-c. 700), a county magistrate and statesman of the Tang imperial court. After translating Di Gong An, Van Gulik became interested in making his own Judge Dee stories. The following is the front abstract: "These eight stories, featuring the master-detective of Ancient China and his assistants Ma Joong, Sergeant Hoong and Chiao Tai, cover a decade during which the judge served four different provinces of the Tang Empire. From the suspected treason of a general in the Chinese army facing the Tartar hordes on the western frontier to the murder of a lonely poet in his garden pavilion in Han-yuan, the cases presented here are among the most memorable of Judge Dee's long and distinguished career.".
