One page autograph letter (4 1/2 x 7 inch) in ink from William Sommerville (1771-1860) to Charles Hatchett (1765-1847) declining an invitation by Hatchett and his wife, writing "I am mortified to find myself engaged on Friday . but there is no help for it", written circa 1820. William Sommerville was a British physician who traveled to Africa, China and Canada, but is best known as the husband of Mary Sommerville (1780-1872), a British science writer. Charles Hatchett was a chemist of some note and is also remembered as being a member of Samuel Johnson's Literary Club. Wax seal still on the backside with addressee's name.. Manuscript.
