Bookplate of Maria Strudwick Read on the obverse of the inscribed ffep. Tiny tag of prior bookseller from Reading UK tipped onto inside front cover. Lucy Soulsby (1856-1927) was a British headmistress of Oxford High School for Girls, who notably opposed women's suffrage and higher education for women. In her first year as headmistress, she introduced chemistry as a subject for girls, warning that it shouldn't overshadow needlework, and hired a new mathematics tutor for the school, Charles Dodgson (Lewis Carroll), who would later become known for his books such as Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. No institutional copies exist and no auction history for this author or title. Quite Scarce., Very Good
