C., J. (Introduction by) : Songs, Madrigals and Sonnets: a Gathering of Some of Themost Pleasant Flowers of Old English Poetry

Longman, Brown , Green, and Co., London, 1849

Very good indeed in the original scarlet ribbed decorative cloth gilt, the rear board with similar blind-stamped images. The cloth is somewhat scarred; the text clean and tight. Each page is surrounded by a coloured border ornamented with arabesques in double lines of different colours, many of them enclosing vignettes. The whole is designed in an old Italian style to suit the supposed origin. The book was produced by Joseph Cundall, printed by Charles Whittingham, and is a delightful example of early Victorian colour printing. of the sonnet or madrigal, and in a note it is stated that the ornamental borders in this book have been printed by means of wood-blocks.
