SHIRLEY KIRCHNER : 1947 - 1951 ORIGINAL PAIR [2] OF SCRAPBOOKS OF A YOUNG BALTIMORE GIRL NEXT DOOR

Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. On offer are two [2] original scrapbooks created and compiled by Shirley Kirchner, nee Mills, of Baltimore, Maryland. Shirley did a great job paying homage to her home town and detailing in ephemera her life. The first book dates from 1947 - 1950 and contains mementos from her school years. There is one earlier item which is a war ration book in her name when she was age 12. It appears that she attended three schools as a teen, Hamilton Jr. High, Eastern High, and the Girls Vocational School. She saved many mementos from those years - school newspapers, prom and party favors, programs, corsages, greeting cards, report cards, tickets, etc, etc. She was a member of Job's Daughters, and was once Senior Princess and another time was Honored Queen. The second scrapbook is of the period right after high school. Her husband-to-be completed basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in May 1951, and she included his certificate and other related items. She was married in December of 1951 and her wedding invitation and many congratulatory cards are included in the book. There are several pages of souvenirs, maps, brochures etc. from a trip to Florida which may be from her honeymoon. There are also a few items relating to the birth of the couple's first child. The pages in the first and oldest scrapbook are detached from the covers. Many of the items are labelled underneath with date and occasion, but some of the items are now loose. The second scrapbook is in better condition, but is not as full as the oldest one. The pages are brittle, especially in the older scrapbook where they have separated from the covers, and have chipping. Overall Fair+.. Manuscript. Book Condition: Fair+
