The commission resulted from Sheets winning the 1962 New York National Academy of Design's Edward Austin Abbey Competition. Some of the text beneath the images is different than in the final mural. For example, in the painting, a text by Nietzsche is at the far right and this is replaced by a text from Whitman in the actual mural. From the estate of Millard Sheets.
