Basil Blackwell. Oxford. 1968

First edition. DW. vii, 195pp. Portrait frontis. A lovely copy of this scarce book in a wrapper slightly worn and creased along top margin of lower panel, that has 2 interesting typed letters from the Publishers to the recipient of the book, both signed by Basil Blackwell. VG+/VG. The first letter dated 29th May, 1968: Dear Professor Hunt, I have pleasure in sending you the latest edition to the Modern Language Studies, Theodor Fontane. We propose to publish on June 11th. Yours sincerely Basil Blackwell. The second letter dated 21st October 1968 reads: Dear Professor Hunt, Sasse: Theodor Fontane. I am sorry to have to tell you that objection has been raised to certain passages ... by two professors of German - Robinson of Toronto, and Garland of Exeter, who would bring a charge of plagiarism, and the author has asked me to withdraw the book. In the circumstances... I promised to do it as discreetly as possible in the hope that this may not affect adversely Mr. Sasse's academic career. No one is to blame. Mr. Sasse intended to make full acknowledgement, but failed. Yours sincerely Basil Blackwell.
