Original black and white composite photograph of four stage actresses, Lotta Crabtree, Rose Coghlan, Maxine Elliott(?), and Ada Rehan. Each of the actresses appears to be in costume. Photograph is mounted on brown cardstock with gilt lettering. The lettering includes the title, "Photographed by Sarony," and "Printed on N. P. A. Extra Brilliant Pense Albumen Paper." No date, circa 1880s-1896. The card measures 5 1/2" x 9 1/4." The photograph measures 3 3/4" x 5 1/4." Each portrait in the photograph measures 1 1/2" x 2 1/2." The photograph is Near Fine. There is an almost imperceptible amount of wrinkling on the composite photograph. There is a small puncture on one of the portraits which does not affect the sitter, Lotta Crabtree. The card is Very Good with edge and corner wear and slight wrinkling. As a whole, the card and the mounted photograph are Very Good. Charlotte "Lotta" Crabtree (1847-1924) was an American stage actress and comedian. Due to her youthful appearance and petite stature, Crabtree was often typecast as children and younger characters but this only contributed to her success on stage. Her acting ability and the characters she played were soon known nationwide. At several points in her life, Crabtree was the highest-paid actress in the United States. Crabtree gave some of her earnings to charities and philanthropic causes. Rose Coghlan (1851-1932) was an English stage actress. She made her debut on Broadway in 1872. Coghlan was also a regular performer at Wallack's Theatre in New York. Maxine Elliott (1868-1940) was an American film and stage actress and entrepreneur. At one point in her career, Elliott was the only woman in the U.S. to own and manage her own theater. Elliott starred in the 1917 movie, Fighting the Odds. Ada Rehan (c. 1857-1916) was an American stage actress and comedian. She was very popular and received critical acclaim in the U.S. and Europe. Napoleon Sarony (1821-1896) was an American photographer and lithographer. He became well-known for his theater photographs of the late nineteenth century.. Photographic Image.
