Bibliography of Canadiana 445 : “A day-to-day record, with notes on natural history, of three trips northwest by land from Hudson Bay. On the last trip, 1771-1772, Hearne reached the Arctic at the mouth of the Coppermine River, the first man to travel overland from the Bay to the Arctic. Hearne was in the Hudson’s Bay company’s service in Canada from about 1765 to 1787.”
Waterston 1795 : “Hearne designed his travel book to feed an established audience. His strong personality infuses descriptions of Coppermine, Prince of Wales’s Fort, Great Slave Lake, and the Arctic shore. He communicates an alternating sense of self-sufficiency and helplessness. Published after his death, the book contains eight chapters of narrative, one chapter on natives, and one on animals. The final product can be contrasted with the rough diary notes (held in the British Museum, with a copy at the Public Archives of Canada, Ottawa). Although he did not discover a northwest passage, and although the Coppermine River that he did discover proved worthless, he did explore 5,000 miles of Canada’s harsh northland as he moved toward the River and the Arctic coast
west of Hudson Bay. And he wrote one of the most readable 18th Century accounts of travel in the interior of Canada.”
Sabin 31181 : “Its publication is due to the celebrated navigator La Perouse who captured Fort Albany, Hudson’s Bay, and found the MS. of Hearne. The fort was afterwards surrendered to the British, but La Perouse stipulated for the publication of this work by the Hudson’s Bay Company, which stipulation was honorably fulfilled in this beautiful volume.”
