Collection of twenty-nine documents related to Samuel Hazlett. Most are entirely handwritten in black ink. A few have printed and handwritten text. 1837-1871. Document sizes range between about 8 1/4" x 10 1/4" and 4 3/4" x 7 1/2." Most documents are one page, c. thirty pages for whole collection. The collection is clean and intact overall. The documents as a whole have fold lines, wrinkling, age toning, darkening, a few small cut-outs (may affect a small bit of text), and occasional tape repair for small closed tears. Documents are Good to Very Good. The entire collection is Good. This collection of papers is directly or indirectly related to Samuel Hazlett (?-c. 1862/63), a longtime resident and businessman in Washington, Pennsylvania. He ran a number of businesses, possibly with his son, including groceries, property rentals, and lending. The papers constitute business-related receipts, rental agreements, business correspondence, and the like. The following is a list of each document in the collection: (1) rent receipt, 1842; (2) receipt, undated; (3) correspondence from R. W. Hazlett to Samuel Hazlett about remitting a package, 1849, on Western Telegraph Co., Washington, PA stationery; (4) note about a "promise to pay" between Samuel and William Harsh, 1851; (5) Samuel's note that reads John Hall has a credit, 1853; (6) bill of exchange, Isaac Thompson of Washington, PA, Baltimore, 1853; (7-8) bills of exchange, John Hall and J. T. F. Wright, 1853 (payment refused), Pittsburgh (copies?); (9) Samuel's receipt,1853; (10) receipt of Adams Express Co. receiving package from S. Hazlett & Son containing 3085 dolls and confirming they will forward to Philadelphia; (11) receipt of payment from Mr. L. Oliver to estate of S. Hazlett, 1864; (12-13) receipts from Washington, PA Post Office for Sam giving them a letter to A. Holmes & Sons, 1867 (Oct. 17 and 19); (14) receipt from Washington Post Office for Sam giving them a letter to Ira B. (McKay?) & Co., 1871; (15) receipt from Collector's Office, IRS for receiving Sam's payment for tax on deposits; (16) receipt from Collector's Office, IRS, for receiving Sam's payment for income tax in 1871; (17) article of agreement (rental agreement),1837, Sam grants Peter Kenedy one year's rent to a house currently occupied by Daniel Shultz, 1837-1839 (notes on back dated 1838-39); (18) rental agreement: Sam grants James Moore annual rent at Chestnut Street house now occupied by Mr. Stockwell, 1839 (dated 1839-1840 on back); (19) rental memorandum: Sam grants annual rent to George Kline at the Shoe Shop (to be made a dwelling) now occupied by J. R. Griffith and adds that he will build a chimney, note about granting Kline privilege to the yard for wood and coal, 1839; (20) rental agreement: Sam grants annual rent to James Moore and William W. Scott at his own house, 1840; (21) rental agreement: Sam rents to John Lenox the Chestnut St. house, Washington, PA now occupied by Kline, 1840; (22) rental memorandum: Sam grants annual rent to Thomas White at the Shoe Shop dwelling formerly occupied by J. Griffith, note about White paying further rent for "corner on which his house stands" and doing repairs; (23) rental: Sam grants annual rent to William Room at the yellow house on Chestnut St. now occupied by J. Steep, 1841; (24) agreement: Sam allows White to rent his house, 1842; (25) letter from S. Cunningham about receiving Sam's (bacon?) and shipping, 1839; (26) letter to Sam from Mr. Holmes, about business matters, 1849; (27) letter from J. (Russell?) requesting that Sam tell him when a monetary note "falls due"; (28) statement of protest by notary public George (Lonkert?) against the drawer of a note he presented to the Franklin Bank of Washington with insufficient funds, 1852; (29) statement from notary public William K. Wallace sustaining that a bill of exchange he presented to the Western Bank of Baltimore could not be paid because George Wright was not available, 1853, two pages.. Manuscript. Book Condition: Good.
