A fine letter, addressed to "My dear Heaton, discussing the drawing "Silence", and requesting six large photos of the work. Rossetti states "The drawing was, as you know, sold during my absence, and, (as I may now say) on a rather hasty affirmative interpretation of what I said about it" He expresses a wish to possibly exchange it for 2 others if this suited the recipient of the letter. Written at a time of great personal crisis, this letter refers to one of Rossetti's fine works depicting Jane Morris. Jane Burden Morris (1839-1914), the face of Silence, inspired numerous works by Rossetti and his friends, including William Morris whom she married. It was to Kelmscott and Jane Morris that Rossetti returned from Crieff in order to seek some measure of repose consequent to his decision to abandon Cheyne Walk as his base. Ellen Heaton (1816-94) was an influential Pre-Raphaelite art patron and an active campaigner for women's rights, education, health, environmental issues and anti-vivisection. She wass a friend of the poet Christina Rossetti,, Dante's sister.
