[We have been advised that Smiley was a professor and from New Hampshire though we can find no indication in the manuscript. There is a section titled "Of distances took from Gibson" which should help confirm the locale.] There are 92 full pages containing, logarithms, trigonometry, geometry and other complex mathematical problems, equations and solutions with many drawings. Problems such as how "To find how high a ?????? at Philadelphia might be raised into the atmosphere and how far the sight must extend to see London ....." There are stains on some pages, the covers absent and 2 of the 3 text blocks are holding by threads. Pages approx. 9" x 12". Overall Fair+. Manuscript.
