Abridged from German-language,original edition of Rohm's memoirs, focusing on material covering the political aspects of Rohm's career from the end of the First World War and his role  in the development of National Socialism.Material covering his early life, military career and service at the front has been contracted and is presented in the Foreword to this edition.        Ernst Röhm was one of the key architects behind the rise of the Nazi Party. From 1919 until 1923, following the defeat of Germany in the First World War,Röhm served in the Freikorps and then NSDAP – the Nazi Party. He served as the party’s patron, promoter and watchdog, and helped found the SA,the thuggish workforce behind Nazi political activity leading up to 1933.It has been stated that the rise to power of both Hitler and the Nazi Party would not have happened without Röhm’s organizational skill, authority and influence. He took part in the Beer hall putsch in 1923,but was sufficiently disillusioned by 1925 with the prospects for Nazism that he stood for the Reichtag instead.    Once described as 'the man who invented Hitler',Rohm was one of the key figures of the fledgling Nazi Party. Commander of the notorious 'Stormtroopers',the fanatical brown-shirted mobsters who assisted Hitler's rise to power in the 1930s; and once a close ally of Hitler,Rohm was later brutally killed by the SS during the Night of the Long Knives.                        Röhm had written and published his memoirs in 1928 – entitled it with heavy irony 'A Traitor’s Story' – referring proudly to his conviction for high treason against the Republic as a result of the 1923 Putsch, the year he both  working for the Nazis and left to serve in the Bolivian army for two years. On his return in 1930 he was made chief of staff of the Nazi Sturmabteilungen (SA),the stormtroopers who played a vital role in the electioneering and violence of the party's rise to,and seizure of,power. On 30 June 1934,after months of tension about the SA's ongoing role in the regime once power had been secured,Hitler and the party leadership moved against the SA.Rohm and other SA leaders were arrested and executed on Hitler's orders. Rohm's private archive was destroyed in the aftermath of his murder on 1 July 1934,and - apart from this autobiography - only a few scattered personal papers remain. The diaries, letters and memoranda that he drew on in writing this book no longer exist. This makes the autobiography even more significant as a source to understand the life and views of this important Nazi leader.
