He served as a U.S. Representative from Indiana from 1847-1853. He was a Democrat. In this speech, Robinson makes a vehement counterargument addressing the Whig Party's general sentiments against President James K. Polk and the Mexican-American War. Much of his speech is his vindication of Polk amid the Whigs' accusation of Polk starting the war. Robinson appears to place much of the blame on Zachary Taylor and his military movements toward the Mexican border. However, Robinson does not appear to be opposed to the war. One of his statements insinuates that Whigs are hypocritical for supporting Taylor as their presidential candidate given Taylor's role in the Mexican-American War. Robinson also references a few of his contemporaries including Abraham Lincoln and John Slidell, the latter of whom had been sent to Mexico by Polk to negotiate the Rio Grande as the southern border of Texas..
