For Private Circulation Only, ?? Malaga Ca.1832

A lithograph depicting the English cemetary, figures and foliage in the foreground, some light scattered foxing, ample margins and in general in good condition. Ink letters R.A. after Roberts' namwe, presumably in his hand. Of the utmost rarity: we cannot trace any copies in commerce in the past 25 years apart from a waterstained example which we obtained from a descendant and sold in 2008, and the compiler of the catalogue raisonne (as yet unpublished) was apparently unaware of its existence until the present example was shown to her. It was acquired from a descendant of Mark. Its existence is documented in Mark's journal. David Roberts, spent three weeks with the Mark family during an extensive sketching trip in Spain. According to Mark's journal, he took Roberts on a tour of the cemetery "where observing the pains I was taking to improve the situation, by planting trees in the adjoining ground, thereby forming an agreeable promenade", he made a drawing which he "transferred to a lithographic stone that I may have numerous copies for the use of my friends".. Information indicates that Roberts did the lithographic plate himself on the spot and printed some examples fo the Mark family.
